Menopause & Bone Loss

During menopause, estrogen levels go down. At the same time, bone breakdown (resorption) may increase. When levels of bone resorption are higher than levels of bone formation, overall bone loss may occur. Because of this, menopause is one risk factor for developing osteoporosis. Indeed, most bone loss occurs within five to seven years after menopause.

Knowing your current level of bone resorption can help you and your doctor make important decisions at menopause and beyond.

The Restore Bone-Loss test measures NTx, a molecule released during bone resorption. The test is used primarily in postmenopausal women and people with osteoporosis.

At menopause, test results may help you and your doctor decide about hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Restore Bone-Loss test results before beginning therapy can be used to predict the skeletal benefit (as measured by BMD) you will receive from HRT. In clinical studies, test results obtained before starting therapy also showed women's relative risk for bone loss if they did not begin therapy.

Then, if you start HRT, your level of bone resorption should go down. The Restore Bone-Loss test can be used as soon as three months after beginning treatment to ensure that your treatment is working.
